The U.S. State Department said Tuesday it was facilitating charter flights from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Jordan for American citizens stranded in the region after the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran.
The State Department chartered the New England Patriots' plane, AirKraft, to fly Americans from the Middle East; officials say the Patriots organization was not involved.
Elie Hanna, CEO for the Middle East headquarters of Air Charter Service, based in Dubai, said most of the flights out of the region are leaving from Oman. The prices are so high, he said, because few charter planes are available since most of them are stuck at airports that are now closed.
A seat on an Irish government chartered flight from Oman to Dublin on Friday will cost €800 (£695). Children can travel for free and elderly citizens or those with medical conditions will be prioritised, according to the Irish embassy in the United Arab Emirates.
The government says the flight from Oman is now expected to depart sometime on Thursday and that "multiple" flights will follow.
